2016 FAVA President’s Report

At the 2015 FAVA Council meeting in Ulaanbaatar, the council set FAVA a number
of goals to achieve prior to the 19th FAVA congress in September 2016 to be held
in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam.

One of the most important – the review of the FAVA constitution (and by-laws) –
also proved one of the most contentious. A constitutional update became
necessary once FAVA established & registered its permanent office in Bangkok.
An initial review to modernise & update the constitution (beyond a simple
amendment) was started during the 2014 Singapore Council meeting & then
continued at the 2015 Mongolian meeting. However, the turn-out for the online
voting in February this year to approve the draft constitution was insufficient to
constitute a quorum. As such the new constitution was not adopted and we are
still operating under the 1993 charter. The matter of how to proceed with
constitutional reform/changes now remains to be discussed by the council this
September. I would encourage all FAVA representatives to closely read the
current constitution prior to our meeting.

The 19th FAVA Congress 7-9 Sep 2016

We are very pleased to introduce the proceedings of the 19th Federation of Asian Veterinary Associations
(FAVA) Congress. Competent scientists and valuable participants from 20 countries have contributed to the
success of the conference.

A total of 106 scientific papers will be presented which strongly support for the theme of the congress
“The Collaboration of Asian Veterinarians in the One-Health Concept”. The congress will start with the
keynote lectures that cover all 8 fields such as “One health and the veterinary profession – issues and
challenges”, “The dynamics of the swine immune response against PRRSV”, “Between bovine milk
production and reproduction: the challenge”, “Phytogenics: a valid strategy to reduce gut stressors”,
“Mechanistic understanding of heat stress response in poultry”, “Production animal welfare in Asia”,
“Minimal invasive surgery in small animals”, “Lung inflammation and novel nanomedicines”, “Development
of Streptococcosis vaccine for tilapia farms”. These lectures will be offered by leading scientists from the
USA, Australia, France, Belgium, Canada and Thailand. Many interesting topics will be discussed during
the oral section relating to swine, poultry, ruminant, companion animal, aquaculture, nutrition, One Health
and veterinary education. Other attractive activities, including visiting poster section, exhibition area or
participating in the symposiums, will also complete your trip to the congress.

We would like to record our appreciation to all invited speakers. Without their support, the conference could
not have been successful. We also acknowledge the authors as well as all reviewers. Their efforts made a
great contribution to the excellent accomplishment of the proceeding. In the proceedings of FAVA 2016, we
are happy to present to all of you the full-text papers of the most updated research and reviews relating to
animal husbandry and veterinary medicine with respect to human health and environment.

The Organizing Committee of the FAVA 2016 has devoted its best effort to prepare one of the most meaningful
and enjoyable congresses. We hope that FAVA 2016 will contribute significantly to the development of
animal production or animal protection not only in Asia but also all over the world.

FAVA Congress 2014

18th Federation of Asian Veterinary Associations Congress
28–30 November 2014 Marina Bay Sands, Singapore

A new feature in the Aust Vet J

This is the first issue of a new initiative for the Australian Veterinary Journal to include highlights of abstracts of papers from local and international conferences. The first conference to be profiled is the 18th Federation of Asian Veterinary Associations Congress (FAVA) which was held in November 2014. Hosted by the Singapore Veterinary Association, it attracted veterinarians from over 28 countries. The congress theme The Rise of the Asian Veterinary Profession offered delegates the opportunity to have access to quality education, including major plenaries, and streams on small animal medicine, dentistry, as well as animal welfare and disaster management. FAVA’s vision is to be recognised by the public as the unified professional association serving the veterinary community and needs of the region. Its mission is to enhance the quality of life of the people in the region through the promotion of responsible animal care and welfare by a unified professional association. One of their prime objective is to foster closer relationships and understanding among Asian veterinarians and veterinary associations. As well as the AVA, its current membership includes the veterinary associations of Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Japan, Korean, Malaysia, Mongolia, Myanmar, Nepal, New, Zealand, Pakistan, Philippines, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Taiwan, Thailand and Vietnam. The inclusion of selected abstracts from this meeting aims to raise the profile and to increase the awareness of FAVA and its roles, for FAVA members.
